Rounding out our process technology portfolio, NN offers a number of value-added services to give customers access to a single source for their most challenging production demands.

Our expert team stands ready to offer design input to help you determine the most efficient way to design and manufacture your product—from consultation on material selection to treatments that achieve required or desired characteristics.  While services like cladding and

wire drawing are offered on a standalone basis, others are not.  Activities like heat treatment, tool design, ultra-precise metrology, and specialized testing are available only as part of existing projects, to help our customers achieve the specific chemistry or material properties needed for their applications.

It’s just one of the many ways NN provides a single source for our customers, which can also mean cost and time savings for you.

MATERIAL SELECTION & HEAT TREATMENT

The NN team can offer design input to help you select the best method of manufacturing your part.  Our team’s engineering and materials science expertise gives us the ability to consider a broad array of materials and/or treatments to achieve the properties needed for your part.

We can source and manufacture materials with properties that meet application-specific performance requirements, and can deploy a variety of atmospheric and vacuum heat treatment processes, as well as plating, coating, measuring, and testing to deliver your optimal solution.

CLAD MATERIALS

NN is a technical leader in the manufacture of custom clad materials. Cladding, which involves metallurgically bonding different combinations of metals, produces functional materials with distinctive properties that meet application-specific performance requirements. We manufacture custom clad materials in overlay, inlay, edgelay, and thrulay designs for products such as electrical components, decorative products, appliance parts, aerospace components, and automotive parts.

Our clad materials are developed based on specific application criteria, such as improved electrical conductivity, better corrosion resistance, improved thermal performance, and weight savings. Our materials engineers study each application to understand performance goals and identify the best mix of materials, resulting in a material with superior qualities that is less expensive than a solid alloy.

WIRE DRAWING

We use a combination of cold rolling and cold drawing technologies to form precision tolerance wire with enhanced mechanical properties for better performance. Our precision wire fabrication division builds custom dies and works with a wide range of materials to serve customers in global industrial markets.

We create flattened, pierced, eared, and notched configurations and supply wire straightened and cut-to-length or spooled. Our wire fabrication services also include custom tooling, and we can handle both low- and high-volume orders.

Using solid modeling software and precision EDM equipment, we build custom dies to exact specifications. Our facility also incorporates annealing and heat-treating processes to increase metal strength or improve manufacturability.

  • Wire profiles measuring from 1.5mm to 16mm in diameter and flat wire from 1.5mm to 19mm wide
  • Cold-rolled wire features tolerances to ±0.01mm and a smooth surface finish

TOOL DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT:  CUTTING

Unlike other suppliers that must rely on external providers, NN utilizes in-house tool design and development to ensure that projects meet your exacting specifications.  

CUTTING TOOLS

We specialize in custom round carbide cutting tools made for finishing the IDs of very complex parts with superior finishes.  With state-of-the-art equipment, design, and measuring capabilities, we have extensive knowledge of tooling processes and requirements, and apply DFM principles—all of which help ensure we meet our customers’ product needs with NN’s custom tooling.

The NN toolroom can make carbide tooling in 24 hours.  This allows rapid prototyping and rapid process improvement, keeping your project timeline on track.  Tooling is tested in our prototype machining area, using the same material and process parameters that are used in production.  This allows us to verify that new tool designs will work as expected in the production environment.

TOOL DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT:  STAMPING

NN excels in manufacturing technologies including but not limited to high-speed stampings, side cutting, transfer systems, in-die tapping, and stud or nut insertion.  We work with our customers from the quoting stage to PPAP submittal, and identify the ideal tooling setup and manufacturing method to ensure the part functions as intended while also saving you time and money.

We design and build a variety of stamping tooling, including progressive, compound, transfer, and secondary tooling.

Our stamping tools are built to last for the life of the project; hardened steel tool yokes contain carbide or other high-strength steel, such as CPM10v or S7.  Hardened punches are guided with hardened pressure pads to ensure precise, repeatable product quality.

  • In-house tool design and build for material thicknesses from 0.02mm to 6mm with part lengths up to 600mm and press sizes up to 330 ton

TOOL DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT:  MOLDING

NN offers custom injection molding based on your project requirements.  We work with you to determine which type of injection molding configuration is needed to meet your project goals—from standard cold runner to multicavity hot runner systems, we have the experience and expertise to provide the tooling required to meet your production demands.  

Excellent molding begins with excellent mold design and construction.  Our tool design expertise spans all type of mold configurations.  From straight pull, 3-plate to mechanical or hydraulic activated slides to unscrewing mechanisms, we have the design experience to specify the best configuration on the tooling.

Our production molds are built to meet or exceed one million shots. We utilize fully hardened cavity and cores using various materials including but not limited to S7, A6, H13, A2, carbide and beryllium copper.  All tools are equipped with side or taper locks to assure precise cavity to core registration.  Integrated pressure and temperature monitoring are also used as indicated.

Our in-house tool room verifies all design specifications are met and maintained before, during and after production.

NN uses state-of-the-art metrology and testing equipment to ensure that our components and assemblies meet required specifications to perform as designed.  And while we do not offer these as a standalone service, our capabilities don’t stop there.

To meet application-specific customer needs, NN also deploys ultra-precise measurement and specialized testing as needed within our production process to provide additional assurance that our components and assemblies are ready to go to work for you.
